The tower
In 1708 the church tower was built. You will find this date over the door of the church tower. In the church tower is a large ringing-bell, which was founded by the bell-founder Andries Heeres van Bergen from Midwolda in 1807. The bell survived the Second World-war – possibly through the then Van Bergens.
The original tolling-bell from 1791 was removed by the German occupying force and has never been recovered. A new tolling-bell was founded in 1948. The bell's inscription is:
"Founded by Jacobus van Bergen at Midwolda, 1948"
"I count the hours one by one
How speedily they will be gone.
But over human's temporality
God's wisdom in eternity."
The church
The church was finished in 1738.
Anna Maria Hora laid the first stone for the church. During the consecration of
the new church the Rev Schortinghuis held a sermon on 1 Kings 8: 29 and 30.
The church is a simple hall
structure, 24,70 x 17,90 m. The walls are approximately 70 cm thick. In the
church chancel there are ten old gravestones of ministers, their families,
leading residents and church-wardens. The oldest dates back to 1625. Two pews
for the gentry, with coats of arms of Hora and Wolthers, are a reminiscence of
the residents of the Ennemaborgh. The church holds a magnificent Hinsz-organ,
built in 1772 by the organ-builder Albertus Anthoni Hinsz. The church, the organ
and the tower were fully restored between 1965 and 1972. The tower was once more
redecorated in 2002. The church and the Hinsz-organ were given major maintenance
in 2004. At the back of the church the cemetery can be found.
